Georgina Luck – Artist Research

The second artist I looked at was Georgina luck, an illustrator who makes simple everyday products using the simple colours of the products but still manages to add the 3-d depth using simple black lines to represent the structure of the products. Which is what appealed to me about her work, the simplicity in each piece.6a00e54f0014bd88340147e2fc7daf970b

I did want to recreate the images using Photoshop as I am very confident with the programme and in my ability to produce the word however I want to take risks and try to expand my skills which is why I used watercolours instead as the illustration are very similar to them.

These were my first two attempts with watercolours. I did the Bovril first but I found that the watercolours I was using were not strong enough, they were not vibrant enough which is why I changed the watercolours and found they worked a lot better which can be seen from the red colour in Bovril compared to the red in the marmite picture. To do the splatter I found bigger brushes worked best as they would make a bigger amount of splatter every time I would flick the brush and they also worked best to dip into the paint then the water and put the droplets onto the page to spread the paint. I first tried to use biro pen to make the outlines and lettering but found It wasn’t dark enough to stand out above the paint which is when I tried gel pen which had a much thicker line and a much darker ink which helped the lines standout.IMG_8851

Once finished I didn’t like how the french mustard came out because it was only one colour and there wasn’t a lot of different shades on the bottle so it was hard to try to make it realistic compared to the other ones that I made. The beans however I really liked because there was a wider variety of colours and many of then ended up mixing together almost which helped to make it look better and the beans contrast the darker colour of the can which is what I like most.

I drew ketchup next because of the bright red colour, I thought it would look very strong on the page and stand out which is why I also drew this on the whole of the page. What I didn’t like the top, as it was originally white it was hard to show it on a white page so I tried using a light grey but it mixed with the red too much for my liking which is what ruined it for me. However the red to me looked good on the whole page.

I wanted to try something different, something else from actual objects to things such as logos that people would know instantly and which they see everyday. I picked the logos above and tried to make them in the same style, it work however there wasn’t much point of using pen for any outlines because on objects the outlines are there to show the structure of the object with logos that’s not possible because they are flat in real life, except for that I still liked how they looked with the splatter style.

The above image is of my attempts at trying to get the right colours for what I was painting, practicing lettering and the logos on the objects. I did find when I tried to mix colours that it wouldn’t because I couldn’t get the right colour on paper and use the paint from there but would have to mix the colours on the actual paper I was painting on and it was hard to always make the right shade because its harder with water-colour to judge the exact amount of paint on your brush and water. It also helped me decide which colours to do for what object and how they would look once on paper.
